Tea & crafts

I know you won't believe it... but when my friend Jessica and I first started to hang out a few years ago, one of the first things we bonded over was the decor of my apartment. Even as a broke artist, I still needed my crappy Brooklyn hovel with the leaky roof and ugly wood paneled walls to look somewhat presentable. So I covered those walls in cheap but cute decorations- thrift finds and several of these craft hoop fabric swatches. I hung them everywhere. And when she came over, she raved over the craft hoops. She suggested we get together and make more, do other DIY stuff, and drink tea.

We talked about this for years. And as time passed by, we would remember from time to time, then exclaim to each other "... and I can't believe we still haven't done our tea and crafts!!!" It was practically one of those really long-running jokes. I figured it would probably never happen.

Well. A few weeks ago, three procrastinating, forgetful girls actually made a plan to get together. We brought little projects we'd been meaning to work on. And tea. And thus, tea and crafts was born!! (I mentioned it briefly in my Friday Pretties post.) Jessica had some mending to do, and Michelle needed to re-attach some buttons to a coat. I worked on some fabric prints, as well as painting a new box to house all my photo stuff.

All the while, drinking lovely mugs of lavender tea.

It was actually a really great day. We all felt productive, by working on tasks that we'd been putting off, as well as getting our much-needed friend time in. And if I do say so, it feels good to do some dedicated activity, without the expectation of alcohol. So many activities in NYC involve drinking... most of them, actually. Sometimes you just want to hang with the hens and cluck... not party :)

We hope to make it a regular thing.

  6. This is just l-o-v-e-l-y! Jen and I don't like going out, so we have our own girls' nights in quite often. Sometimes it's a craft project, like the night we made our budgie birds a nest; sometimes it's a spa night! Some nights involve lots of coffee, and others are beer or Absinthe or Scotch. ^_^

    1. Yeah, just grab a few girls and set aside some time! It's good because it gives you the motivation to do those projects that you've been putting off.

  10. agreed. I don't drink really so going out when thats all everyone wants to do is quite the drag for me :/ Lovely get togethers like these are my favorites <3 I find it gives time for so much mind blowing conversation, in the intellectual way :)

  11. Oh this is lovely! A shop in my local town recently started doing ceramics painting days, I went with a friend and the atmosphere and experience was lovely. Nothing like fun craft times with friends :)
