may the odds be ever in your favor...

i dont' usually do posts like this... i like to stick to life events, music, outfits, and fun stuff. but it was on my mind...

like many people, i went and saw the hunger games last weekend. i haven't read any of the books, and went into it purely from recommendations.

the movie was pg-13, so the violence wasn't crazy. i'm usually a wuss when it comes to that stuff. but it was after i got home that the concept started getting to me...

the characters must face something so horrible... movies like this make me obsess over what i would do in an extreme survival situation. so the question posed to all of us:

**would YOU survive in the hunger games?**

(12 males. 12 females. battle to the death. one makes it out alive.)
(in the books/ movie it's only for children aged 12-18, but we'll suspend that for a second.)

i have to admit, i don't think i would make it.

my strong points: i am hyper-aware of my physical surroundings, as well as intuitive of people's intentions. also, based on childhood wrestling matches with my brother, i can get out of choke holds easily.

in "the games," these things could earn a few valuable seconds of a head start if i were running away from someone. it may send an alert if i felt someone were stalking or following me. and with a face-to-face rival, it might mean i could maneuver well.

but these things would not help me to outrun a faster competitor. or overpower a stronger one. i do have a strong survival instinct, but that's not necessarily the same as someone who has been trained in hand-to-hand combat. or who can come up with a brilliant strategic plan.

my prediction- i'd last maybe a few days.

i'd hide, steal food and supplies, and run from conflict. i don't think i could actually kill anyone- but who knows what a person would do in that crazy situation. i'd be tripping my way through the forest one day, looking for water, and suddenly get an arrow through the head. or something less nice.

it's kind of morbid, but do you ever think about survival situations? how would you fare?

friends! the up to the moon EP is now available for streaming and preorder on bandcamp. you can also join the facebook event to show your support! listen now:

  1. I think I would die pretty fast. Why? Well, I'm slow, so running away isn't a great option for me. If I did manage to get away I don't know enough about survival in the wilderness to make it for very long.

That said, I fight like crazy, and I'm stronger than at least 90% of the girls I know, and stand a decent chance against many guys too (because I'd go straight for the eyeballs, which would make fighting back difficult for them), so if it came down to hand-to-hand combat with most people, I'd stand a chance. If they had weapons... probably not so much.

  2. I'm almost positive I would die or be killed within 2 days. While I have good intuition...I am unfortunately a diabetic so I can't imagine food/insulin being easy to come by. But more than likely...I'd be shot with an arrow or something similar before I died due to diabetic complications.

Blogger Hunger Games - I wonder who would survive if you put 24 bloggers in an arena. There would be a ton of handmade leaf/flower things that's for sure :p

  3. i thought about putting together a blogger hunger games!! something where everyone could be eliminated in some manner. but then i thought that would be sad... i don't want to eliminate anybody!

  4. I have some friends who are obsessed with the 'zombie apocalypse' so I think about these imaginary situations a lot more than I should. I don't think I'd be the first to die, but I don't think I'd win either. I'm not in good shape, but I'm small, pretty smart, and a good hider. All that said I don't think I'd be good in a 'kill or be killed' situation, I have a hard time even squashing bugs.

  5. omg... i wanted to write about the zombie apocalypse too!! i wanted to tie it into this post, but then though it would be too much.

i was thinking about it after watching the walking dead. my thoughts are something like "i'm walking down the street right now, and 50% of the population is already dead, but 50% is zombies. i have a gun. but a group of 10 zombies is approaching. would i survive?" I DON'T THINK I WOULD???!!

  6. I've been thinking about this non-stop!

  7. I know I wouldn't last very long...though like you am also hyper aware of my surroundings...almost to a fault and I am pretty darn right on when it comes discerning people motives or intentions. Other than that...I run like a girl and have not a bone of athletic ability in my that's that, I would be toast for sure.

A blogger Hunger Games would be pretty sick though:)
    Happy weekend Chantilly! xx Marisa

  8. I agree with you about The Hunger Games sticking with you after the movie is over. I can't get it out of my mind. If I was a player in the games I wouldn't last at all. I'd be like Rue up in the tree's stealing food. I'm not a fighter.

  9. I thought about this a bit and decided I would not last long.
I do not have many skills that would get me far in the games, and I am not very tough.
The only way I would win is if I found a berry field somewhere by a water source and laid low. While laying low the others would all have to kill one another, I dont think i have that in me!

  10. thanks for visiting my blog and the nice comments! i would pretty much spaz and hide and hope someone came along that was nice enough like the friendship katniss made with rue, but when it comes down to it, like most, i don't think i could take anyone's life. but it is so hard to imagine such an extremem situation! thank goodness we don't have to!

  11. I haven't seen the Hunger Games, nor do I think I am going to; but it surprises me to find that both adults and young adults are so hooked on the story.

Hope you have an amazing weekend! ;D

  12. I finally saw the movie last night, and I did read the first book and there is NO WAY I would survive very long.
1.I don't think I could kill any animals to eat, let alone people! But who knows if you're in that situation...
2.I'm scared to be alone at night.
    3. I'm sensitive and shy and would be seen as an easy target, just like real life :)
Just to name a few reasons...

thank you for taking the time to leave a comment :) i appreciate your thoughts.
