there was a bus to nyc, which the camp had provided to staff as a means to get to their flights (a lot of staff were international.) i took it as well because - you guessed it- i live here.
so there we were, getting off at penn station, when poor matt said he had nowhere to stay that night. we immediately took him in, and proceded to hang out with him for about four days...
not exactly proper english tea...
i can't tell you how weird it was to see him on the same trains that i take daily. to be relaxing in places like swallow cafe, kave cafe... these are my sacred sanctuaries. these are my hallowed grounds. it was two worlds smashing into one another, and felt a bit like an episode of the twilight zone!
:creepy theme music:
later in the week, beautiful lynnette stayed with us for a few days... she was one of my camp roomies! by this time, the creepy twilight zone feeling had subsided and it was smooth sailing. we ended up ducking into dunwell donuts one day, along with our other camp friend, elana.
dunwell is special because not only are the donuts fabulous, but the decor is incredible. it's 1930's themed, and plays a great selection of period music. even the owner keeps with the theme- always decked out in spectacles, a bowtie, and suspenders!
i've actually been meaning to post about dunwell for awhile, and i'm happy that these amazing people could be the catalyst!
lynnette, i miss you! come stay on my couch forever!!
♥ listen to my new record on bandcamp ♥
Ahh the doughnuts look heavenly<3
ReplyDeletethey are :) x
DeleteOh! I really want to go to Dun-Well Donuts when I come to NY. We have a few vegan bakeries here in Toronto, but none with such a variety of donuts!
ReplyDeletereading the comments, it looks like you're not the only one... this place is pretty famous, even though its only been open a few months! let me know when you'll be there, and we'll all meet up for a dunwell date. x
DeleteI feel pretty jealous of your camp experience this summer! It sounds so fun to get to live in the woods for a few months and meet so many new people. Plus I can't help but think of Wet Hot American Summer :) I'm glad you made some new friends and they could help your transition back to city life. I'm also glad you're back!!
ReplyDeletei haven't seen that movie in so long! it was an amazing experience, though. you should teach at a camp next summer if you can! i'd definitely recommend it :)
DeleteEeep this has been on my list of places to explore now that I live in the city! Vegan doughnuts, right? Looks gorgeous.
