March 2012 | Chantilly

new skins :)

hi friends!! thank you for all your sweet words regarding my needing some time off. i'm so glad many of you can relate.

well, i'm stepping in from my "hiatus" for a second (which has lasted what... a day so far?) to let you know that i've redesigned my blog! i planned to launch the new design on the 1st, but i was messing around on the laptop by myself last night, and kinda couldn't wait. it looks something like this...

Screen Shot 2012-03-28 at 12.54.51 PM

the "new look" also resembles the cover art for my upcoming ep!! and trust me... you'll be hearing a lot about that this month too :) so come on over and check it out for yourself.

i hope everyone is having a lovely day :)

OH, and ps. and... you may have noticed... i scheduled a very unfinished post for yesterday and forgot about it because of my "break." i'm actually really embarrassed about it. oops! sorry to anyone thinking "wtf," and that post will be going up tomorrow instead :)

sick day(s)

what up, gang.

chan hide

i'm not feeling too well today. i played at pianos last night... and whenever i play at pianos, i always end up talking to strangers and having a few too many drinks :)

then i had this idea that today i was going to do yoga, some life organizing, take some outfit photos, schedule some posts for this week... but yeah. that's not happening....

so it's a sick day. the doctah is in (me), and i am prescribing myself a chill pill.

i may also utilize this opportunity to take a few days off. i've been feeling a need for a break from the ole' blog, so i might only be posting sporadically this week. feeling like i need to post a lot has been kind of stressing me out lately... you know? i just want to free myself for a few days so that i can remember why i like to blog/ play music/ be artsy in the first place. i think it's a necessity for anyone who does any sort of creative activity regularly.

okayyy... so i do have some posts lined up for this week. but i dunno. i'm just gonna take it easy, i guess.

hope everyone's doing well out there. have a glorious day!

those crazy cats

nothing much to say today.... so i thought i'd share some recent pictures of my darling girls :)

when thelonious wants us to play with the string with her, she makes this horrible sound like she's dying. and she makes this face.

you're so vain

i was feeling especially girly the other day. i had just dusted off my vanity and was admiring it's gratuitous prettiness, when it occurred to me to start taking pictures.

so then i thought. "hey, this could be a great blog post. i'm gonna show everyone how i get ready to face the world every morning." and so it began...

my lovely vanity is from the 1920's. it was a birthday present from matt a few years ago. my makeup setup before then was sad in comparison... a teensy side table and a train case. i feel so lucky to have this now!

vanity 2

lately i usually have a candle burning, even in the daytime hours. tj maxx is where i've been finding a bevy of yankee candles for cheap! i know they're a little cheese-sauce, but they smell nice and last a long time :)

vanity 3

here's my mirror tray- i thrifted it for $1! i keep here bobby pins, some everyday items, and pretty trinkets that i like to look at. the gold makeup case is from a brand called besame. both the packaging and the formulas of this brand are supposed to be reproductions of 1940's-era cosmetics!

vanity 4

more on besame... here are some lipsticks from them, in 40's-style bullet cases. i keep them in an empty candle jar that i once got from anthropologie. unfortunately i almost never use these anymore... but they sure are pretty to look at.

vanity 5

here, we have my makeup brushes, eyeliner, mascara, and lip liners that i never use.

and... a sampling of products stashed in my drawers :) i'm kind of a blush and lipstick hoarder, so those items are prominent, even though i've gotten rid of A LOT of stuff over the years...

vanity 6

(left to right)
~ wet 'n wild blush. best kept secret. $3 and it wears all day. the color "heather silk" is beautiful.
~ nars blush. i have two of these, and honestly i barely use them. but i keep them around because every girl needs a nars blush.
~ nyx cream blush. nyx is probably my favorite makeup brand ever. amazing and CHEAP. i can't live without their concealer for my under-eye circles.
~ mac mineralize skinfinish. these were all the rage a few years ago, and i'm still fond of this one- called stereo rose.
~ mac pigment sample. these are usually free if you just go up to your local mac counter and ask for a sample. good backup highlighter, and it lasts forever.
~ mac lipstick in russian red. if you own one red lipstick in your lifetime, this should be it.
~ lipstick queen lipsticks. my favorite brand of lipstick! super pigmented, and so smooth you forget you're wearing them. i wear rose sinner and saint natural regularly.
~ perfume samples from garden botanika. i can't help it. this is the only perfume i actually like.
~ some random glosses. i think they're nyx and besame. gloss used to be my thang, but it's sadly taken the backseat to my lipstick queen lipsticks.

all this and......

it usually takes me about 5 minutes to put on my makeup. i usually use the same products and do the same routine: brow highlighter, brow grooming, concealer, mascara, eyeliner, blush, lipstick, done. i've only been recently doing a little highlighting eyeshadow on my lids.

i hope you enjoyed taking a little peek, though!

do you wear makeup? what items are your favorites?

in the red

yesterday was so beautiful! red tights outfit 2

remember how i complained about st. patrick's day on friday?

well i did end up going out. i danced with friends, saw the inside of too many bars, and had a nice, blurry time of it all. unfortunately, i was still suffering from my jameson-filled night when i woke up sunday morning...

but fortunately, my chipper friend jessica persuaded us to come out for brunch. she's leaving for los angeles in two weeks to do bikram yoga teacher training! we're trying to get in lots of hanging-out time. (and have a tea-and-crafts date planned for this week!)

the teeniest cupcake i ever did see...

in the cutest, most unicorn-filled parts of your dreams, have you ever conceived of tiny little cupcakes the size of a quarter?

well they exist in new york. EVERYTHING exists here, apparently...

i was near grand central the other day, when i passed by a store that made me back it up: a tiny cupcake bakery.

tiny cupcakes 2

check out that menu... how could you not go inside?

while deciding what i wanted, i talked to the cashiers about the other tiny cupcakes i had seen recently at the lulu's event. i wondered aloud if they were related. i described them, and they exclaimed "yes! those are our betsey johnson cupcakes." ... did you hear that? there is such thing as tiny betsey johnson cupcakes!! and i ate one!

anyway, i got a peanut butter, cookie dough, and red velvet.

i'm sorry about this sad overexposed photo, which doesn't come close to displaying these cupcakes' majesty, but i could barely be bothered to take a better one. see, after a long train ride home with these things burning a hole in my pocket... they weren't getting in my mouth fast enough. and that needed to not be.

tiny cupcakes

have you ever seen/ made a cupcake this small?

painted jars diy

i came across these jars via pinterest (i think.) it's not in english, but i got the gist through the pictures. it made me want some cute painted jars of my own, so i did it...

paint jars 5

paint brush
mason jar(s)

i used acrylic paint from michaels- only 59 cents each and so worth it! about $3 worth of paint = countless happy days, planning a dozen other painting projects reeling through my mind.

anyway, they didn't have a lighter aqua, so i just got turquoise and mixed it in with white...

paint jars 1

paint jars 2

then i just took my little paintbrush, and painted the inside of the mason jar. i did two coats, because otherwise you can see the brush strokes if you tilt it towards the light...

paint jars 3

i let it dry, and bam... new cute pen holders for me!

you can even go wild and do designs and stuff. i tried to make a heart in the yellow jar, but it didn't really work out. i messed up too many times and ended up going with the solid color. either way, i'm happy.

(ps, the balloon postcard in the background is from the little illustrator.)

it's good to have friends

after standing in line all day in the cold on saturday, i kind of just wanted to go home and hide in bed. but i had a social engagement to attend. i wanted to just skip it, but was told by some friends i hadn't seen in awhile that i needed to be there... so i did the next best thing...

i went to the party. had some tacos. and hid under the covers with my friend maeve.

being campy

good morning monday, sweetrobins! today's outfit is pretty casual, but i'm in love with it...

chan outfit 6

chan outift 2

a few weeks ago, i made a decision. simply put... i need more vintage plaid shirts in my life. i scored this one recently at a little vintage shop for only $7! i was quite pleased with myself, and have been wearing it ever since.

chan outift 3

the jeans are from uniqlo, as are all my pants. did you know that they have free hemming at their stores? it's a miracle. anyway, i haven't bought new jeans in over a year, and desperately needed a new pair.

also wearing my favorite scarf... a regular on the blog :)

so... i don't want to keep everyone in suspense about my audition on saturday: i didn't get a callback.

and surprise surprise... i actually cared. i don't really watch, or generally respect reality tv shows. so this was supposed to be all for fun, and a learning experience... but i left feeling disappointed and like a failure. i guess a cheesy rejection is still a rejection.

i do know that there were 6,000 people there that day. i know that at that point, it's really just an eliminating game, and they're looking for any reason at all to send you home.

i won't lie and say my audition went perfectly, and omgz how could they clearly not see taht i wuz tha best singar evar???? but i do think a lot of it boils down to the tastes of the judge that you happen to have been paired with. you could have everything they're looking for, and still not make it.

and that's showbiz, kids :)

11 things

late to the partaay...

amy tagged me in the 11 things meme that's been all the rage lately. i had some free time to work on this last night, so here's mine!

There are five rules:
1. Post these rules.
2. Post a photo of yourself and 11 random things.
3. Answer the questions set for you in the original post.
4. Create 11 new questions and tag people to answer them.
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them you've tagged them.

chantilly 11 things

My 11 Random Things

1. like amy, i hated cats for as long as i could remember until i lived in brooklyn. i desperately wanted a pet, so we got max at a shelter. four cats later...

2. the name "chantillysongs" goes all the way back to the myspace days, when we were all creating our music pages. my friend kira named her url "kirasongs." i thought this sounded much cooler than "kiramusic" or whatever. so i copied her :)

3. in my lifetime, in order, i've had the following jobs:
chamber maid, coffee shop barista, furniture store cleaning woman, ice cream scooper, hotel front desk receptionist, retail sales associate, bank teller, racebook cashier, bartender, liquor store clerk, box office ticketer, waitress, flyer hander-outer, administrative assistant, professional temp, project coordinator, photographer, and music teacher. yes, i'm exhausted (and there are probably some i've missed.)

4. i'm learning the song "hold on" by wilson phillips right now for a student/ my friend and um... i'm loving it a little too much.

5. i used to hate radiohead on the sole premise that everyone else liked them (plus the song "there there" used to give me panic attacks.) now, they are my fave :)

6. ... speaking of panic attacks, i got my first one when i was 19, and i thought i was dying.

7. i'm horrible at running. but i did track in high school just to be social.

8. my second apartment in brooklyn was a complete crap-hole, but i loved it because it was mine.

9. i've always wanted to go on a cross-country road trip. most preferably in an rv.

10. one time, little richard was performing at the casino i worked at. it was halloween, and i was eighteen, so of course i showed up to work dressed up in a glittery, over-the-top gown. i was coming back from dinner, when he scooted past me with his security entourage and quipped "OOOOOHH, GIRRL you look so pretty!!!" i was glowing after that.

11. speaking of celebrities- even though i live in nyc, i cannot spot them to save my life. there was that time i thought i almost saw lindsay lohan... a guy i thought looked a lot like andre 3000 walking across the street in the most obscure part of midtown... john lithgow in herald square (but why the hell would he go there??) but that's about the extent of it.

Amy's Questions

1. What is your spirit animal?
probably a bird. since i am an air sign, i've always felt very connected with them. i used to have dreams about flying a LOT, and i think it would be such a cool perspective to have!

2. What is your most embarrassing moment?
that time i told a guy i liked him, and he just nodded and walked away. then we had to work together for six months. super fun.

3. Would you rather have a tattoo of Patrick Swayze as a centaur or Chris Farley as a Chippendale's dancer?

patrick swayze all the way! the tattoo would have to be on my butt, though. luckily, i live upstairs from a tattoo parlor (coincidence??)

4. What is playing on your iPod right this instant?
i don't have my ipod on right now... but the last songs i played (please don't think is horribly vain) are the ones from my new ep! it was actually so that i could determine the mood/ tempo/ genre/ subgenres of the songs...

5. What is your dream place to live? If money and practicality weren't issues?
i've thought out this fantasy very elaborately over many years. i'd definitely have multiple homes and split my time between them. i'd love to have 1) a beach cottage in my hometown in ri, 2) an apartment in new york- probably williamsburg or park slope, and 3) a cute little house in austin- i fell in love with this city when i visited a few years ago.

6. What do you want to be when you grow up?

if you remember seeing my list of jobs up there, you can probably surmise that i'm fickle :) (but it's mostly because all those jobs sucked.) the good news is, i think i'm very close to figuring it out!! i really do love teaching music, and can see myself doing it for awhile. of course, i've always wanted to be a professional rock star. whatever i end up doing, i want it to be creatively fulfilling, make me feel productive, and leave me enough time for relaxation and "me" time.

7. If you could play any musical instrument, what would it be and why?

well, i already play guitar and sing. but if i had the luxury of picking up something completely new, i'd say cello. or maybe expand on my plucked-stringed-instrument skillz and take up the banjo. i tried to play it a few times before, but couldn't deal. it seems super complicated.

8. If you had to wear one last pair of shoes every day for the rest of your life, what pair would it be?
that would have to be my red oxoford easy spirits. i've bought these shoes at least three times already over maybe ten years. i just can't stop lovin' em.

9. If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, and a piece of chocolate cake on the side.

10. Would you rather kiss a wookie or an ogre?

11. What is your favorite part about spring?
omg, EVERYTHING. but mostly that it feels exactly like the moment you take off those itchy tights you've been wearing all day long.

My tags and Questions

Miki, Amber, Jenna, Marisa, Caitlin, Katie :)

1. Where are you sitting, and what are you doing right now?
2. What's your favorite fruit? Least favorite?
3. Are you a dog or cat person?
4. Who's the last person you talked do, and what's the last thing you said?
5. Name your top five bands/ music artists.
6. Where did you grow up?
7. On your fantasy trip of the world, where would you go?
8. Describe your perfect day- from start to finish.
9. What's your least favorite smell?
10. Imagine your 2 most favorite foods are people, and describe the way they met.
11. Do you prefer to receive flowers or chocolate from a significant other?

wow, that was kinda long! but hopefully now, you know everything about me you've ever wanted to and more. have a wonderful wednesday everyone! xoxo

doe a deer in headlights

do i feel slightly like i'm in an american apparel ad? or maybe a deer in headlights? perhaps. i think i like the aesthetic, but i just wish i was wearing something different. my outfit feels a bit too precious for this type of artsy, raw-looking photography. oh well. just tryin' some new things out :)

so on mondays, i don't have students. i usually use the time to plan posts for the week, answer and send emails, catch up on blog reading and commenting, and other internet activities. i can spend all day and all night doing this stuff... all day, every day (not just mondays.) i don't think i have to tell anyone how the black hole of the internet can suck you in...

instead of that- today i did yoga, then some life-planning and organizing over coffee. i really like this sort of time, because it gets me excited about projects, blogging, and working again!

sometimes i feel like i'm just drudging through it all, just because i "have to" for some reason. i like remembering that everything i'm doing now contributes lifelong dreams of mine- making a living on my own, completing musical projects, expressing myself in ways that i choose, and helping people achieve their own successes.

what's better than that?

oreo truffles recipe

i don't know where i found out about this recipe... i think it was on pinterest. but once i saw it, i couldn't get it out of my head...

things are about to get crazy up in here. we are about to dive into the wonderful world of oreo truffles, friends. get yourself prepared.

1 package (18 oz.) Oreo cookies, crushed into small pieces
1 8-oz. package cream cheese, softened
White or Chocolate melts for dipping

truffles 1

(i used chocolate chips, mostly because i don't know where to conveniently find candy melts in my neighborhood.)

♥ Mix crushed Oreos and cream cheese until well-combined.
♥ Either use a food processor or a ziplock and blend with your hands.
♥ Roll into 1-inch balls and place on baking sheet or tray.

oreo truffles 2

♥ Refrigerate until firm, 3-4 hours (or stick in the freezer for about an hour).
♥ Dip Oreo balls into chocolate and place onto waxed paper to harden.

oreo truffles 3

♥ Chill and serve cold or room temperature. Makes about 40 truffles.

Now, I have a secret for you...

I want to tell you how awesome they were...

but the truth is, I was a mite disappointed with these. They were REALLY really chocolate-y, when I thought they were going to be more Oreo-y. It could've been because I used actual chocolate to coat them, rather than candy melts.

I think when it comes down to it, I'm much more of a cake person, rather than a candy person (unless the candy in question is caramel, toffee, or peanut butter-related.) All the more reason to hunt down some candy melts and make me some cake pops.

Bottom line. If you are a chocolate-aholic... if you are a cacao FIEND... if you *REALLY* really like can't live without loads and loads of chocolate in you life... make these asap.
