Maple Syrup and Raw Honey Review and Giveaway
I was contacted by Mohawk Valley Trading Company a few weeks ago with the most incredible offer- they wanted me to review some of their raw honey and maple syrup products! Well, they didn't have to ask me twice... I was all over it :)
I was sent the Raw Orange Blossom Honey, Raw Buckwheat Honey, and Pure Maple Syrup. If these sound amazing- they are!! They also sell comb honey- the rawest honey available. I've never had this, but it sounds decadent and wonderful.
It was really interesting to learn about their products, and processes of making things. For instance, Mohawk Valley specializes in honey made mostly from nectar of particular blossoms or flowers. This gives each honey a different flavor... So their blueberry blossom honey bees are transported all the way to Maine to get nectar from blueberry bushes. Similarly, the orange blossom honey derives from bees in Florida, frolicking around in orange trees. So cool!
OKAY, SO!! Let's talk about how it tastes.
My first thought was to make honey with biscuits. I haven't had this in such a long time, and it was such a great excuse to do it. You can of course make your own, but these are just store bought. Pop them in the oven, give them a pat of butter, and dribble on the good stuff.
It was interesting to have different versions to compare, as I've mostly only had the store-bought stuff. But I can see why people shell out for better quality. Aside from just being delicious, you can use raw honey for its health benefits. The catch is it must be raw- which means no heating or pasteurization. Heat unfortunately destroys the good-for-you properties which you want... all the pollen, enzymes, propolis, vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, and aromatics, etc.
Both honeys definitely are sweeter and fresher than anything you can find at the supermarket. The buckwheat honey is dark and rich, and almost has a molasses-like quality. The orange blossom honey is golden and super sweet.
Is gorgeous a word that can be used to describe food? These flavors are simply gorgeous...
As for the pure maple syrup- is there anything better? The process of making pure maple syrup is intense... Theirs comes from sugar maple sap, and has double the sugar content of other maple species... around 2% (This is a good thing!!) They also sell maple sugar, which looks a lot like brown sugar, and is basically crystallized maple syrup. Yum!
Of course I opted to have it traditionally on pancakes :)
