Easy Vanity DIY- Repaint!!
I've only just warmed up to the concept of painting furniture to beautify your space. In the past, I've been content just to nail a few things to the wall and call it a day. This past year though, I've been paying more attention to all the ways you can beautify a living space- including painting furniture!
One of the first things I did when we moved into our recent apartment was paint my vanity. It is vintage, and I'm not that experienced in painting furniture. Part of me died inside to alter it. But at the same time, I've been wanting to paint it for awhile. It started to seem a little too old-fashioned looking to me, and I wanted a modern touch.
So I fired up a few Youtube videos, covered the entirety of our room in tarp, and got to work. The whole process was somehow very soothing. And at the end of it, I had a totally different piece of furniture!
Here is what we started with:
Such pretty details, right? Now you can see why it was hard for me to bite the bullet, but I did!
Next steps were pretty straightforward-
+ I disassembled the mirror and took out the drawer handles.
+ Primed with some Zinsser (picked up at WalMart.)
+ Did two coats of Behr Premium Plus satin paint in Tahitian Breeze. Then sanded in between.
+ The sanding was really key. I'm a weirdo who finds sloppy/ imperfect paint jobs charming- probably because I grew up surrounded by furniture lovingly globbed over with paint by my mom. But being that there were a lot of curvy details, I wanted the cleaner look.
+ I found a method of painting around the mirror that had me sticking paint chips around the edges rather than using tape, which I thought sounded cute and practical. I can't totally recommend it though, as I did pull off some of the paint when I was taking the chips out. As a result, the lines near the mirror aren't totally clean. I don't mind though!
And... the finished result!!
The paint is so much more vibrant than the pictures- I think the yellow chair is just stealing the vanity's thunder a little :P I love the color aqua, and it makes me so happy to do my makeup here every morning.
Two thumbs up for repainting as an easy fix for reinventing your rooms/ furniture :)
