Hello friends!
I guess you could say that I've been a "work from home" freelancer for several years now. It's a little funny to me, since to be honest, I usually can't get much done when I'm at home! 🙈 Weirdly, I find my home to be distracting and not all that motivating when I'm alone. I prefer to work around other people, so I usually opt for a local cafe or coffee shop.
Obviously a lot has changed in the past few weeks, and going to work outside my home is not an option right now. So I've started to develop a routine that helps me to be even more productive than I ever have been before! I've put together seven tips that will help you do the same :)
(btw, get my faux ivy garland here!!)
1. Get Yourself Some "Co-workers"
If you have a significant other or roommate who's around with you, you're in luck! My husband has been working from home recently, and having him around has been the #1 thing that's helped my productivity. In general, people stay on-task more when they have others around them who are also working. So use it to your advantage!Happy hour optional 🍹
(but if you do, you might want to try a watermelon lemon drop cocktail, girlscout cookie drink, or pina colada!)
2. Set up "Co-working hours" on Facetime or Skype with Friends
So you don't have any built-in coworkers in your house or apartment? Not a thing! Just get some friends together on Facetime and create a co-working party online. Use it for the social aspect, or help keep each other accountable for the work you're doing! You can even designate team leaders, share what you're working on, and help one another by congratulating them after they've met their goals for the day! It's up to you how long you want to Skype. It can go for the whole day, or just check in with each other at the beginning and end of the day.
3. Get Dressed & Do Your Morning Routine
Many people like to work from home in their pajamas, and I congratulate them on that. When I try to work in my pajamas, all it does is make me want to lounge around and watch Real Housewives 🍿 Also- for whatever reason, I can't seem to get work done if I don't have my makeup on! So I make sure to do my makeup every morning before I start work.
So to help your mindset stay in work-mode, keep with whatever your normal routine is, including dressing yourself.
4. Set a Work Schedule
Being a content creator, it often seems like the work never stops. One time recently, I had an appointment with my doctor. He made an offhand comment along the lines of "Well, on your days off you can just do blah blah." (I can't actually remember what we were talking about) And I was like... I literally don't have any days off!! 😂But lately, I've been practicing having dedicated work hours, and it's been a game-changer. Since I know I'm getting things done during the day, I feel totally free at night to totally relax, watch TV, read a book, or write in my journal.
If you make things a habit, it's more likely that it'll stick. So use this time now to set up a work routine for yourself that will stick with you in the future!
5. Make a Specific Time for Cleaning, Chores, and Errands
Part of the reason I have a hard time working from home is that I see all the messes around me and can't stop thinking about them. It's hard for me to concentrate knowing that housework needs to be done.If I even start one little task it sets off a chain reaction. I'll be unloading the dishwasher, then I notice the floor needs to be swept too. The plants need to be watered. And THEN I'm sidetracked, and it's harder than ever to get back on task.
So I've been making a specific time every day to clean up our space. I like to do it in the afternoons, but maybe you like mornings better! Either way, you'll feel good about your tidy surroundings and not worry that chores are going undone.
6. Drink Plenty of Water
Coffee, coffee, Coffee, COFFEE, COFFEEEE!!! 😊 That's how it feels in our household every day when Matt puts the pot on in the morning. I'm the first one to admit that I LOVE coffee! However, if you're working from home, you might be drinking too much of it. Eight glasses of water per day is the standard. One trick is to have a big bottle next to you to track how much you drink! Staying hydrated will also help you concentrate better, have less headaches, and make your skin more glowy. So drink up!
7. Netflix and Chill
Making sure that you're able to stop work at a certain point and have leisure time is super important! So go ahead and take that time at the end of the day to unwind any way that you need too. Whether that be Netflix or a glass of wine. Maybe even a bath, or walk around the block.I find that meditation helps a lot with this, so here's my meditation guide!
Thanks so much guys! Have you been working from home recently? How's it going?
