Dining at The Greens Pier 17 in NYC

If you’re anything like me, you've heard a lot of buzz about The Greens Pier 17 New York. The breezy rooftop space reconfigured itself in 2020, in an attempt to fulfill the demand for socially-distant dining. It was actually one of the first restaurants of its kind to adapt a full-scale overhaul to accommodate this need!

The original idea of The Greens at pier 17 NYC, is that people could go out and enjoy a nice meal, while also being safe.

Nowadays, the main reason that people love to visit The Greens at Pier 17 is its lavish seasonal setups. The rooftop switches from private mini-lawns in the summer to cozy cabins in the winter!

The menu changes as well- going from hearty dishes in the fall and winter, to light and refreshing fare in the warmer months.

Not to mention, the amount space you get while dining on this Pier 17 rooftop restaurant is positively luxurious for NYC dining. And the views of Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge are unparalleled.

Whether you’re looking to experience the rooftop cabins at Pier 17, or see the Pier 17 rooftop lawns, you’ll find something to like here for sure!

Luckily, I’ve been to The Greens at Pier 17 New York both in the winter and summer seasons. I loved it both times. So I wanted to give you a little recap of my experiences!

The Greens Pier 17 Winter Cabins

I have to say, my favorite time to come Pier 17 is during the colder months... Of course, that’s because of the cozy winter cabins at The Greens!

There are 32 individual 10x10 dining cabins. And don't worry--  they’re not like the huts you see on the streets set up for dining. These are custom cabins, touting ski chalet vibes to the max.

My personal favorite touch is the cozy virtual fireplace, complimented by the warm lights of all the other winter cabins on the rooftop.

The seasonal drinks menu includes cold-weather standbys like hot buttered rum and mulled wine. There’s also many great food options, but my absolute favorite thing was the fondue.

Also note- The cabins are equipped with air purifiers, and there is contactless food delivery. You order everything on your phone via QR code, and it gets dropped off right in your cabin.

The Greens Pier 17 Mini Lawns

Now picture this-- it's the middle of a hot, hot summer. You’re feeling down about being stuck in the city while all your friends are in The Catskills or Hamptons… so why not rent your own personal backyard?

In the warmer months, The Greens Pier 17 cabins turn into 28 socially distant mini lawns that make the option of staying in the city that much sweeter.

Each Pier 17 rooftop lawn measures 14-foot-by-14-feet. They're complete with cabana-style furniture and umbrellas to keep your precious skin from the sun. There are also separate lawns you can rent, equipped with party games like Jenga! Perfect fun activity for family and friends.

The contactless food delivery process for the mini lawns is the same, and of course, you get the same stunning views of the views of the Brooklyn Bridge/ lower Manhattan…

The only difference this time is that instead of fondue and hot buttered rum, there are lobster rolls and margaritas for you to chow down on 🗽🦞🥂 (PS, The buttermilk fried chicken is also a hit!)

RESERVATIONS

Now you’re probably wondering how to reserve Pier 17’s cabins and rooftop lawns and other logistics. Here’s the deal- 

• Reserve your cabin or mini lawn on their website portal. Just Google Pier 17 The Greens, and you'll find it.

• The space (cabin or lawn) can fit up to 8 people.

• Your reservation is for 90 minutes.

• There is a reservation fee, and that fee does not include a credit towards your meal.

• The prices for the reservation vary depending on whether it’s lunch or dinner, or weekday or weekend, and what time of year it is (before Christmas is more expensive.) The fees range from $10-$75.

HOT TIPS!

-   The most popular season at Pier 17 rooftop is November-December, aka right before Christmas time. And is it any wonder why? With all the glowing lights in the dark and drinks designed to warm your belly, this place screams festive.

So if your'e looking to eat at The Greens rooftop during the Christmas season, be sure that you make reservations well in advance. Spots book up really quickly.

-   And if you did miss out on that coveted dinner reservation spot? Don't count out lunch! Not only are the spots less expensive, but if you get a spot around 3:30pm, you'll be there during golden hour (the prettiest time of day for photos.)

-   Likewise with reservations during the week. They're less crowded and less likely to book up quickly.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Let’s be real- the Greens at Pier 17 is all about the vibes and ambiance.

Keep in mind that even though this is a sought-after spot, there are things that keep the mood very informal. For example, they serve everything with disposable plates, glasses, and silverware (which they use for safety measures.) I'd classify the whole experience as fancy-casual.

All in all, the Pier 17 winter cabins and mini lawns are great for a breezy bite. I’d recommend The Greens as a perfect place for a casual brunch, get-together with friends or family, or date night!
